Lower saucon township, pa - truck driver hurt in four-vehicle i-78 crash after tractor-trailer crosses median

Lower Saucon Township, PA (Oct. 26, 2026) – A truck driver was taken to a hospital with injuries after a four-vehicle crash on Interstate 78 in Lower Saucon, according to Pennsylvania State Police.

Trooper Nathan Branosky, public information officer with State Police’s Troop M, said troopers responded around 9 p.m. to mile marker 64.5. Police said a tractor-trailer driver heading east crossed the center median and struck a tractor-trailer head-on in the westbound lanes.

Another tractor-trailer heading westbound then crashed into the tractor-trailer that had crossed the median, according to police. Cargo spilled onto the highway, and Branosky said the rig was carrying cranberry juice. A fourth vehicle, a transit van, was also hit.

Investigators shut down the westbound lanes, and the highway reopened by 5:15 a.m. on October 27, Branosky said. The driver who crossed the median was taken to a hospital, and his condition was not immediately available. State Police’s Troop M Motor Carrier Safety Assistance Program Unit is assisting with the investigation.

This is a developing story. Details may change as the investigation continues.

Trucking Company Liability After a Tractor-Trailer Crash on I-78 in Pennsylvania

When a commercial truck is involved, responsibility can reach well beyond the person behind the wheel. Depending on what investigators find, the driver, the trucking company, a cargo loader, or a maintenance contractor may share liability.

Evidence in trucking cases can disappear quickly. A truck’s electronic control module records speed and braking. Federal rules limit a driver to 11 hours of driving after 10 consecutive hours off duty (49 C.F.R. 395.3), and logs, inspection reports, and maintenance records show whether those rules were followed.

  • Who may be liable: the truck driver, the motor carrier, the company that loaded the cargo, and any company that maintained the rig. The cause of this crash has not been determined.
  • Shared fault: Pennsylvania uses modified comparative negligence, so an injured person can recover unless they are more than 50% at fault, and any award is reduced by their share (42 Pa.C.S. 7102).
  • Filing deadline: generally two years from the crash, which for an October 26, 2026 crash is October 26, 2028 (42 Pa.C.S. 5524).
  • Insurance: Pennsylvania auto policies carry at least $5,000 in first-party medical benefits (75 Pa.C.S. 1711), and a lawyer will check whether limited tort or full tort applies (75 Pa.C.S. 1705).
