South Scranton, PA (June 27, 2026) – Two people riding electric bicycles were injured Saturday evening in a crash involving a passenger vehicle at the intersection of Pittston Avenue and Cherry Street, according to the Scranton Police Department.
The collision happened around 5:29 p.m. Police said officers found that two e-bike riders had collided with a northbound passenger vehicle. Both riders were injured and transported by Pennsylvania Ambulance to Geisinger Community Medical Center. The occupants of the passenger vehicle were not hurt.
According to a preliminary investigation, the e-bike riders were traveling west on Cherry Street when they entered the intersection at Pittston Avenue. Witnesses told investigators that the riders traveled through a posted stop sign before the crash, police said.
Both e-bikes were seized as part of the investigation. Detectives are also reviewing video evidence, including footage from a COLTS transit bus that reportedly witnessed the collision.
Police said the investigation remains active. Charges could be filed after investigators complete their review of all available evidence.
The Scranton Police Department also said it has seen an increase in complaints involving e-bikes throughout Scranton and Lackawanna County. According to police, many complaints involve riders failing to obey traffic control devices, traveling at unsafe speeds, or operating recklessly.
The investigation is ongoing. Our thoughts are with the injured e-bike riders at this time.
An e-bike crash can raise complicated legal questions, especially when fault is disputed or the police investigation is still active. Insurance companies may rely on early witness statements, video footage, or preliminary reports to argue that an injured rider caused the crash.
That does not always tell the full story.
After an e-bike accident in Scranton or Lackawanna County, injured riders should:
Pennsylvania follows a modified comparative negligence rule. In many injury cases, a person may still be able to recover compensation if they were not more than 50% at fault. That is why the full evidence matters, including the intersection layout, vehicle speed, sightlines, witness statements, and any available video.
Injured riders may be able to seek compensation for emergency care, hospital bills, follow-up treatment, lost income, pain and suffering, and other crash-related losses.
If you or someone you love was injured in an e-bike crash in Scranton, do not assume the insurance company has the final say. E-bike accidents, bicycle crashes, pedestrian injuries, and vehicle collisions all require a careful review of the facts before fault is decided.
