Penn Forest Township, PA (Sept. 17, 2026) – Kyle Elardo, 27, of Suffolk County, New York, died after a hit-and-run crash on State Route 903. Pennsylvania State Police are searching for the driver who struck him and fled.
Troopers said Elardo was riding an ATV northbound on Route 903, also called Church Road, late that night. For reasons still under investigation, he was thrown from the ATV and left lying in the travel lane.
The ATV came to a stop off the road and showed no damage, police said. A vehicle then struck Elardo and left the scene without stopping.
Investigators believe the vehicle was a white Subaru sedan with damage to the front fender on the driver’s side. The Carbon County Coroner’s Office pronounced Elardo dead at 12:18 a.m. on Sept. 18.
State police, including the Fern Ridge and Lehighton stations, are investigating with the coroner’s office and a crash reconstruction unit. Anyone with information is asked to contact state police.
This is a developing story. Details may change as the investigation continues.
A driver who flees the scene leaves behind a short window to identify them. Paint transfer, fender damage, and nearby camera footage are often the only leads before they fade or get erased.
Even when the driver has not been identified, a claim may be available under the victim’s own uninsured motorist coverage. Pennsylvania follows a modified comparative negligence rule, so a family can still recover even if some fault is later disputed, as long as the victim was not more than half responsible (42 Pa.C.S. § 7102).
A wrongful death claim after a hit-and-run generally must be filed within two years of the date of death (42 Pa.C.S. § 5524). Elardo died on Sept. 18, 2026, which puts the filing deadline at Sept. 18, 2028.
