Head-On Crash in Monroe County

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation reported 3,902 head-on crashes and 126 deaths in head-on crashes statewide in 2024, according to its annual Pennsylvania Crash Facts & Statistics report. A family facing a death from a collision like this has many decisions to make at once, and these steps can help.

  • Ask the investigating police agency for the crash report number and the contact for the trooper or unit handling the case.
  • Find out which tow yard holds each vehicle, and ask that none be released, crushed, or sold for salvage while the case is open.
  • Collect every auto policy in the household, since more than one may apply, and send insurer calls to one family member or an attorney.
  • Request several certified copies of the death certificate, because banks, employers, and insurers each want an original.
  • Save receipts for funeral, medical, and travel costs, plus the person’s recent pay stubs and tax records.
  • Be careful with social media posts about the crash, since an insurer can read them later.
