In this series we show you the importance of being your own advocate when it comes to your health and the many ways you can prevent common medical errors.

Why should you take charge?

Medical errors are considered the third leading cause of death in the United States. The American Association for Justice estimates that 440,000 errors resulting in death occur each year. We’ve learned a thing or two after handling medical malpractice cases for more than 30 years. We’ve learned that while medicine is complex, errors often can be prevented in simple, common sense ways. When you take charge of your own medical information you can actually decrease the odds it will happen to you.

Advocacy Series Highlight: Covid-19 Nursing Home Neglect

In the current climate of the public health crisis, we continue to applaud the many healthcare workers and staff for their selfless efforts and perseverance in battling this pandemic on the front lines. That said, there has been concerning news of local facilities failing to provide basic common sense protection to patients and employees from the spread of the Coronavirus. We are deeply saddened and disturbed by news in the past week about a local hospital and nursing home knowingly putting employees and patients in harms way. We applaud the hospital employees and family members who brought these painful situations to light. There must be an independent investigation of each case of suspected neglect and violation of Department of Health Guidelines. At this unprecedented time we are placing a tremendous amount of trust in our health care providers particularly when it comes to our elderly parents and relatives. This is because we, their advocates, are separated from them and cannot watch over their care. When this trust is broken it can be devastating as we have seen in the case of the woman who lost both her parents, patients in a local nursing home, to the corona virus. Our hearts go out to these families who will feel this pain and loss forever. When a medical facility or its staff fails to protect the most vulnerable patients and employees, action needs to be taken to hold them accountable for their negligence. If it leads to preventing even 1 death then the effort is not in vain. For more information on nursing home neglect and medical negligence, click here.
